Brabencová, Markéta ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Němcová, Lucie (referee)
BRABENCOVÁ, Markéta. Pohromadě sami: kolektivní jednání v době sociálního distancování. Praha, 2022. 57 s. Bakalářská práce (Bc). Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut sociologických studií, Katedra sociologie. Vedoucí diplomové práce prof. PhDr. Ondřej Císař, Ph.D. Abstract The thesis deals with collective behaviour, as a form of coordination between people for political or social purposes during a pandemic. I am particularly interested in this issue from the perspective of the transformation of political activism. For this work, I define collective behaviour as a meeting of at least three people, in order to express an interest or problem in relation to public institutions, both in person and online. The mentioned pandemic period means the term from March 1, 2020, when the first Czech patient was tested positively, until August 31 of last year. The aim of the theoretical part is to present the political activism itself, individual types of collective behaviour, to describe the strategic protest repertoire and a view of symbolic instruments. The empirical part provides an analytical and systematic capture of collective action in the Czech Republic during pandemic. For that, protest events analysis was chosen as a methodological tool. In an effort to capture the pattern of contention politics...

Háčková, Kristýna ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Master's thesis entitled: Is Czech Society Divided? The Sociological Analysis of Social and Political Polarization in Czech Society is concerned with the study of polarization on a mass level. Its main goal is to indicate social and political polarization by means of a questionnaire survey and subsequent quantitative analysis to identify any fault lines and determine the essential factors that contribute to polarization. The author first focuses on research into party and political polarization, from which she moves to the social dimension of polarization, i.e. the key topics and groups that form fault lines. In the text, the author further focuses on opinion extremity, affective polarization and perceived polarization, where the influence of (a)political anger or political engagement is examined. Last but not least, the influence of social media use and exposure to extreme views and political content on levels of polarization is examined. The results show that Czech society does not appear to be strongly divided, rather it feels that way. However, the research revealed several lines of conflict in society concerning the political situation, human rights, topical issues, social questions and wealth inequalities. The results demonstrated the influence of factors such as (a)political anger, political...
Of activists and people: A discourse analysis of selected cases of political activism in the Czech context
Kňapová, Kateřina ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis deals with media representation of protests in the Czech media. They are anti-communist protests, student, "anti - austerity", anti-Roma and anti-racist or antifascist. The author has used critical discourse analysis on a sample of media texts from 1/2008 to 7/2014 period. It focused on analyzing the labeling of protesters, representing the relationship between the protests and democracy and the protesters and society or "ordinary people". The author concludes that labeling the protesters as well as representation of the relationship between protest and democracy in the reference sample strongly reflects the overall concept of the Czech post-communist identity as the one that emphasizes moderation, but also individualism or rather minimalist definition of politics as limited to the party or parliamentary politics. As congruent are usually presented anticommunist protests and student protests, on the other hand suspicious or problamatic are framed union protests or "radical" or "extrem" protests.

1 Abstract The bachelor's thesis deals with the collective of the Autonomous Social Center Klinika in Žižkov, on the example of which it examines the internal values of its members and then raises the question of whether it is possible to find aspects of subculture, counterculture or social movement in this collective. The theoretical part focuses on a summary of the development of the subcultural, countercultural and social movements studies and then presents the definitions of these concepts in the post-soviet Czech Republic. Subsequently, I describe the development of Czech squatting. Important part of the thesis are interviews with former members of the collective. Černá, Anna ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Matoušek, Petr (referee)
The aim of the text is a critical sociological analysis of the role of the institution of school in the process of forming an active citizenship which is perceived by the author as a specific pattern of behaviour acquired during socialisation. The participation model of democracy, from which stems the Czech educational curriculum, aims to raise informed and active youth adhering to democratic values. Formal education as one of the actors of secondary socialisation is the only publicly controlled tool of education of citizens. Although the citizenship education is formally a part of the curriculum, contemporary research in the Czech environment shows that school does not play a significant role in political socialisation of young people. For this reason, the author of the text looks at the formal education from a different perspective and discusses other aspects too. The key view for the author is the one of Czech political activists who she perceives as a necessary part of civil society and a prototype of active citizens. The analysis of the role of the institution of school is based on 26 deep interviews with representatives of political activist organisations. The author introduces school as an institution of citizenship education which on one hand fails in the political socialisation of the young, on the...
Participatory Democracy and Political Activism
Polák, Martin ; Znoj, Milan (advisor) ; Bíba, Jan (referee)
(in English): This bachelor thesis is dedicated to theories of participatory democracy and utilization of their ideas on the work of political activists in the Czech Republic. A theoretical basis of this work is definiton of participatory democracy, mainly according to Carole Pateman, Benjamin R. Barber and Brian Barry. This theoretical frame is subsequently used for the research part of the thesis, which is based on interviews with chosen representatives of political activism in the Czech Republic. These interviews are analyzed to find out, if the ideas of participatory democracy are important for the work and self-understanding of political activist, and if they are necessary for them. Since nowadays view of sociologists is, that there is mainly the transactional activism in the Czech Republic which does not include ideas of participatory democracy, the aim of this thesis is to point out, that there should be a general sociologist opinion which counts with the ideas of the participatory democracy as an important part of the political activism in the Czech republic, because, as my research has shown, these ideas are significant part of the self-understanding of chosen political activists.
